TWIGI AND HER CHILDRENOur cute friends - turtles
Our Twigi was lonely. We decided to have some fun and make
little turtles out of recycled materials. These turtles are her children.
Before we started making little turtles, we talked about
turtles. We learned that turtles inhabited the Earth before dinosaurs evolved,
and they are still here. There are more than three hundred different species of
turtles in the world, seven of which are marine, 180 freshwater, while the rest
live on land. Since 2000, World Turtle Day has been celebrated on May 23.
They live on all continents, and are recognizable by their
shell, longevity, and slow movement. They range in size from 10 centimeters to
over one meter.
They are herbivores and carnivores, and what they have in
common is that they hide in their shell from danger and cold.
In our area, the most abundant are water and forest turtles,
which enter hibernation during the winter.
As the temperature drops, so does their body temperature and
their organs begin to slowly fall asleep. Enzymes do not work, they do not eat
and simply start to sleep. The heart rate is reduced to a total minimum, and breathing
is almost non-existent.
In many cultures, the turtle is considered a symbol of
wisdom. In the story "The Tortoise and the Hare", she outsmarted the
rabbit and reached the goal first.
Our next fun task is to name the little turtles.
